NT and the PC organisation at DAPNIA ( CEA/SACLAY ):
Since Mi-97, we have decided the PC and a X-emulator would be the new desktop machine instead of a X-terminal. The first step was to homogenize our park ( now, we try to buy only the "same" standard PC ) , the OS version ( NT 4.0 SP3 if possible ), the software ( if possible ), the NT domain. We have decided also to use the CERN NICE software to configure automatically a part of our PCs.
4 NT domains:
2 NT server and only Windows 95/98 machines using Office and local administrative applications.
1 BDC, printing server ( 40 printers)
1 other printing server ( 30 printers )
1 BDC, home directories user ( ~100 ) and Nice program server ( 20 % of the Nice clients )
1 server for Nice program applications ( 80 % of the Nice clients )
1 Wincenter ( 15 users ) Server ( for the users of X-terminal and Unix Stations )
All our NT server are in NT 4.0 server american with SP4 .
The users have choice beetween the Outlook client to access MsExchange server or Netscape Messanger 4.5 and Pine ( on Unix ) to access our IMAP unix server. Our MsExchange server is also an Imap server.
Most of the
informations for the PC users are done by www pages (accessibles only inside CEA).
The clients are today :
mostly NT 4.0 SP3 ( 90% of the new PCs (< 2 year ))
some 95/98 : portables, administrative PCs and old ones
some 3.11 ( very old specific applications )
The language of the OS and the applications are always french (if available) but the server are in English.
Services :
Today : For every client of the DAPNIA, we offer the following services :
TCP/IP protocol only
Printer services
User directory ( weekly backuped ) Services
Some network software
Network Software and OS distribution
Roaming profiles ( for the Nice Client only ).
Nice at SACLAY for NT and 95/98 :
Nice, the software developped by CERN has been ported for the french version and local configuration at the end of 1997. Each application ( in french in general ) is totally reconfigured locally. In use since January 1998, Nice is today on 80 PC and on perhaps 50 % on the new NT PCs. Nice at DAPNIA is principally on NT station but the portables are using NICE 95.
( details will coming soon... )
The Futures :
NT / Unix Integration : Samba are in test to share disk between PC and Unix
Quota on the user directory
Y2K : SP4 for NT 4.0 and upgrade of some products/bios...
Windows Terminal Server instead of Winframe 1.6 for our Wincenter service
Windows 98 and Nice for Winfows 98 for the portables : We are using it non officailly without any problem
Windows 2000 instead of 98 for the other PCs ( if the release of Windows 2000 is
not delayed forever ...)
