EU Grid PMA Meeting - January 2007

Venue

Cosener's House, Abingdon,  UK and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, Didcot, UK

Dates and times

The meeting will start at 14:00 on the 15th January 2007 (with lunch provided before-hand at 12:30) and finishes by 16:00 on the 17th January. We will meet on Monday and Wednesday at Cosener's House and at RAL on Tuesday. Transportation between Abingdon and RAL will be provided for the Tuesday meeting.

Accommodation and Registration

A number of en-suite rooms have been reserved at the Cosener's House. These will be available on a first come basis. The deadline for requesting rooms is 13th December, 2006. After that date or if we run out of rooms, we will try to help but you may have to find your own. For those taking a room in Cosener's you will pay them  directly with, for example, a credit card and receive a receipt. It will cost £66.40 per night for Bed & Breakfast.

There are also some rooms available for the night of the 14th Jan, however many people should be able to fly in on Monday morning. We may be able to find rooms for the night of 17th January if you request this, although the meeting is ending in time for many people to catch evening flights from London.

Travel by public transport

London Heathrow (LHR)

Roughly 1.7 hours journey once you get out of the airport

The most convenient airport is Heathrow. If you arrive there we recommend a coach (X70) from the central bus station (near terminals 1 and 2) or from Terminal 4 walk outside and turn left just outside the building to find the bus stop. Get a ticket to Gloucester Green (the main Oxford bus terminal - and final stop for the bus) in Oxford and then take a bus (X3/X4 from Castle Street - "New Road" on the bus map) or taxi to Abingdon. If you have a mobile phone with you, you may prefer to get off at Thornhill Park and Ride (the first stop in Oxford) and call a taxi as the last bit of the journey into the centre of Oxford can can take a long time if traffic is heavy. Two local taxi firms are:  ABC Taxis (+44 1865 770077) or  "24" (+44 1865 722799). A period return on the bus between Heathrow and Oxford costs only slightly more than a single.

Alternatively take the RailAir bus from the airport (40 minutes)  to Reading railway station and then travel by train to Oxford. There is a very good bus service (X3) from the Oxford railway station to Abingdon.

The longest and most expensive route - but it can be quite quick - is to take the Heathrow Express train to London Paddington railway station and then get the train to Oxford and finally a bus or taxi to Abingdon.

London City Airport (LCY)

Roughly 3 hours journey once you get out of the airport

If you travel in to London City Airport it is easy to get to Paddington by taking the DLR to Bank and then the underground. One ticket covers both systems as far as Paddington.

London Gatwick (LGW)

Roughly 3 hours journey once you get out of the airport

If you arrive at Gatwick you can take the X80 bus to Oxford. It comes into Oxford the same way as the X70 from Heathrow so the same options for getting off at Gloucester Green or at Thornhill apply.

Alternatively get a (slow) train to Reading and then change for Oxford.

Airports to avoid

We do not recommend London Stansted or Luton - though both are possible, transportation to/from Oxford/Abingdon is more difficult.
